Sri Lanka , whose NOK , the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka , was founded in 1937 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1948. From 1948 to 1972, the athletes appeared under the name Ceylon at (IOC Code CEY). In 1976 they did not participate. Athletes from Sri Lanka have not yet participated in the winter games. Young athletes took part in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

Overview

Sri Lanka's first Olympic team, called Ceylon , consisted of athletes and boxers in 1948. The country's first Olympian was track and field athlete Duncan White on July 30, 1948 . The first Sri Lankan woman to appear at the Olympic Games on September 20, 1988 was the swimmer Dipika Chanmugam.

In addition to athletics and boxing, Sri Lanka was also involved in the following summer games swimming and diving (from 1952), cycling (from 1960), wrestling and shooting (from 1964), sailing (from 1968), weightlifting (from 1984), badminton ( from 1992) and judo (from 2016).

The first medal was won at the very first Olympic participation. Duncan White won silver in the 400 meter hurdles. It would take 52 years before another medal could be won. In the meantime, the island nation's athletes started under the current name of Sri Lanka . In 2000 in Sydney the athlete Susanthika Jayasinghe won silver over 200 meters.

Youth games

When the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games were held in Singapore for the first time , seven young people, four boys and three girls, took part in athletics, swimming, table tennis and badminton.

At the second event in 2014 in Nanjing , nine young people, seven boys and two girls, took part in the sports of athletics, rowing, swimming, tennis, beach volleyball and badminton. Badminton player Sachin Dias won a medal that is not included in Sri Lanka's medal record. Together with its Chinese partner He Bingjiao he won the double for mixed team bronze medal.
