Gabon boycotted the Montreal Games in 1976 and the Moscow Games in 1980 . In 1976 the call for a boycott of African countries was followed, and in 1980 that of the USA.

1984 in Los Angeles for the first time athletes competed. The shot putter Odette Mistoul was the first woman to take part in the Olympics for Gabon on August 3, 1984. She was able to qualify for the final and was 13th. The 1988 games in Seoul , in which only two participants were sent, were just as unsuccessful as the 1992 games in Barcelona , where judoka were used for the first time. Gabonese participants also had no chance at the games in Atlanta in 1996 .

The participants in Sydney in 2000 , in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008 had no chance, with an athlete competing in Taekwondo for the first time in Beijing.

In 2012 in London , a Gabonese men's soccer team started for the first time. After two draws against South Korea and Switzerland and a defeat against Mexico, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's team was eliminated in the group stage. Anthony Obame was able to win silver in the heavyweight division of the Taekwondo tournament and thus the only medal for his country so far.

In Rio de Janeiro , the Olympic selection was again unsuccessful. For the first time an athlete was used in swimming.
