Uruguay , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Uruguayo , was founded in 1923, first took part in the 1924 Summer Olympics. With the exception of 1980, athletes were sent to all of the following summer games. In 1998 Uruguay took part in the Winter Games for the first and only time. Uruguay sent young athletes to both of the youth summer games that have been organized so far.
Overview
Summer games
When Uruguay made its Olympic debut in Paris in 1924, the Olympic team consisted of boxers, fencers and the national soccer team. Later, Uruguayan athletes were involved in rowing (from 1932), basketball, water polo and sailing (from 1936), athletics, cycling, modern pentathlon and swimming (from 1948), horse riding (from 1960), shooting (from 1968), weightlifting ( from 1988), judo and canoeing (from 1992) as well as water jumping and tennis (from 1996) active.
The first Olympians in Uruguay belonged to the national football team, which played their first tournament game on May 26, 1924 against Yugoslavia. On July 1, 1924, the first individual athletes competed in fencing. The brothers Domingo and Pedro Mendy as well as their teammate Gilberto Telechea competed in foil fencing. The first woman from Uruguay to attend the Olympic Games was the javelin thrower Estrella Puente in Helsinki on July 24, 1952.
The Uruguayan national soccer team was able to win the only two gold medals in Uruguay to date in 1924 and 1928. In the preliminary round, Yugoslavia was defeated 7-0, in the round of 16 the USA 3-0 and in the quarter-finals France 5-1. Uruguay won against the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals and met Switzerland in the final. Uruguay won the final 3-0.
In 1928 in Amsterdam, the team formed the Uruguayan Olympic team alone. The team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the round of 16 and beat the German Empire 4-1 in the quarter-finals. Italy were defeated 3-2 in the semi-finals. In the final you met the archenemy Argentina. The game ended after extra time 1: 1. A replay was scheduled three days later. Uruguay won 2-1 and was able to repeat its Olympic victory of 1924.
The rower Guillermo Douglas was the only Uruguayan athlete in Los Angeles in 1932. With his bronze medal in one, he was the first individual athlete in his country to win an Olympic medal. It was the three-man rowing team in London in 1948 who were able to upgrade their country's medal balance with a silver and bronze medal. Eduardo Risso won silver in the single, the double scull with William Jones and Juan Rodríguez won bronze. In cycling, the four-wheeler came fourth in the team pursuit, while Leonel Rocca came fifth in the sprint .
In 1952, the rower Juan Rodríguez won another bronze medal in the double scull, this time with his partner Miguel Seijas . The basketball team qualified for the quarter-finals and eventually made it to the semi-finals against the Soviet Union. After a 57-61 defeat, Uruguay played the bronze medal against Argentina and won 68:59. 1956 in Melbourne, the basketball team was able to qualify again for the quarter-finals. And like in Helsinki, they made it to the semi-finals. Here the enemy was the USA. Uruguay lost 38: 101. The bronze medal match against France was won 71:62. In athletics, the long jumper Fermín Donazar reached the final and was twelfth.
In 1964 in Tokyo, boxer Washington Rodríguez won bronze in the bantamweight division. In 1968 in Mexico City Ana María Norbis reached the finals over 100 and 200 meters breast. She finished eighth on both routes. Only in 1992 could an athlete qualify for a final again. The athlete Ricardo Vera reached the final of the 3000 meter obstacle and was twelfth. In 1996, the cyclist Milton Wynants was seventh in the points race.
2000 in Sydney Wynants was able to win a medal for Uruguay again after 36 years. He took silver in the points race. In 2004 in Athens he reached 9th place. The sailor Alejandro Foglia took 8th place in the laser class in 2012. In athletics, Emiliano Lasa was sixth in the long jump in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Winter games
In 1998 in Nagano, a winter sports enthusiast from Uruguay took part in the winter games for the first time and so far only. The ski racer Gabriel Hottegrinde competed in the slalom and reached place 24.
Youth games
Four young athletes, two boys and two girls, competed in horse riding, swimming and taekwondo at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . Show jumper Marcelo Chirico won the individual ranking on Links Hot Gossip .
In 2014 in Nanjing , 22 athletes, seven boys and 15 girls, competed in athletics, basketball, hockey, beach volleyball, sailing, horse riding, swimming and table tennis.
Art competitions
As part of the Olympic art competitions in 1924, the author LA Fernández submitted his work Greetings to the Olympians , but was unable to place. The painter Pedro Figari was represented in Los Angeles in 1932 with five works ( Bull Fight , Going to Races , Traveling , Amazon and Country Races ). In 1948 the authors Clotilde Luisi and José María Podestá submitted their piece El Desafioa in the Dramatic Works category . They received an honorable mention.
IOC members
Julio César Maglione , former swimmer and president of the FINA World Swimming Federation until 2016 , was elected an IOC member in 1996. His membership ended in 2015 for reasons of age. In 2016 he became an honorary member.
