Julio César Maglione (born November 14, 1935 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan sports official and former swimming athlete . After his active sports career, he worked in numerous official positions. Maglione has been President of the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) since 2009 .

Sport and training

Maglione was Uruguayan champion and record holder in the disciplines butterfly and breast over 100 and 200 m from 1949 to 1954 . Internationally, he took part in a Universiade , in Latin America Games and, for example, in the Pan American Games in Mexico in 1955.

Maglione studied dentistry and received her doctorate from the Universidad de la República in the state capital of Montevideo.

Olympic Committees

Since 1987 he has been the President of the Comité Olímpico Uruguayo . Within the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), he was promoted to Vice President as representative of America until 2002 and remained in this position until 2018.

Julio Maglione was a member of the IOC from 1996 to 2015 , where he held various positions. Among other things, he was involved in the coordination of the 2004 , 2008 and 2016 Summer Olympics , and was also a member of the IOC Commissions for International Relations, Olympic Solidarity and Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport. After retiring as a regular member in 2015, he has been an honorary member of the IOC since 2016.

Swimming

In 1969 Maglione took over the chairmanship of the Uruguayan Swimming Federation (FUN) and held this office until 1985.

From 1976 to 1978 Maglione was President of the Confederación Sudamericana de Natación (CONSANAT), the association of South American swimming federations, of which he was made honorary president in 1984. Following his regular chairmanship, he became president of the American Union Americana de Natación (UANA, or English Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas , ASUA) in 1979 for a term until 1983 . In 1995 he was elected for a further four-year term.

Maglione has been a member of the board of the World Swimming Federation since 1984. Between 1988 and 1992 he was Vice President of FINA. He then worked as the FINA's honorary treasurer until 2009. He was elected FINA President in 2009 and re-elected for four years in 2013 and 2017. His term of office ends in 2021.

Others

In the second half of the 1980s as well as the 1990s Maglione was the Comisión Nacional de Educación Física and was Under-Secretary of State for Public Health in 1991/1992 .

In 1989 he temporarily took over the chairmanship of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol . 1995–1999 he was vice-president of the Uruguayan Automobile Club, then its president until 2007 and honorary president since then.

From 1998 to 2002 he was President of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport, the World Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) of UNESCO and has been its Honorary President since then.
