Mozambique , whose NOK , the Comité Olimpico Nacional de Moçambique , was founded in 1979 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1980. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games.
Overview
At the Olympic premiere in Moscow in 1980 , the Mozambican Olympic team, the largest to date with 14 participants, consisted of nine athletes and five swimmers. The swimmers Pedro Cruz and Raimundo Franisse were the first Olympians in Mozambique on July 20, 1980. The first woman from Mozambique to take part in the Olympic Games was the 800-meter runner Acacia Mate on July 24, 1980. No front placements.
In 1988 in Seoul boxers took part for the first time. In athletics, 15-year-old Maria Mutola competed in the 800 meter run. While she was eliminated in the first round in Seoul, she reached the final in Barcelona in 1992 and was fifth. She also qualified for the final over 1500 meters, where she finished 9th. In 1996 in Atlanta , she won the first medal for Mozambique with third place over 800 meters.
In 2000 in Sydney she was even able to improve her result from Atlanta. She became the first female Olympic champion in Mozambique. In 2004 in Athens she achieved fourth place again. In her sixth participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , she reached 5th place at the age of 35, making her the most successful Olympian in Mozambique. In Beijing, the country's judoka took part for the first time.
Canoeists competed for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 . In the single canoe ( C1 ) over 1000 meters, Mussa Chamaune reached the semi-finals straight away, as did the two- person canoe together with Joaquim Lobo.
