Tunisia , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique Tunisien , was founded in 1957 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, first took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics. In 1980, Tunisia joined the boycott call in Moscow. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games.
Overview
1960 to 1980
Morocco first took part in the 1960 Games in Rome . The 45 men competed in athletics, boxing, fencing, cycling, modern pentathlon, shooting and soccer. The first Olympians came from the boxing relay. On August 25, 1960, the bantamweight Tamar Ben Hassan, the lightweight Noureddine Dziri, the light welterweight Azouz Bechir and the welterweight Omrane Sadok competed in their first round matches.
In Tokyo in 1964 , there were recorded the first medal winnings. The first medalist in Tunisia was Mohamed Gammoudi on October 14, 1964 , who won silver in the 10,000 meter run. Boxer Habib Galhia won bronze light welterweight a week later. A Tunisian judoka took part for the first time in Tokyo. In Mexico City 1968 Gammoudi was able to triple his medal yield. In addition to winning a bronze medal over 10,000 meters, he became Tunisia's first Olympic champion on October 15, 1968.
In Munich 1972 handball players, volleyball players and a wrestler started for the first time. Mohamed Gammoudi won his fourth Olympic medal over 5000 meters with silver. To this day (2017) he is the Tunisian with the most medals at the Olympic Games. Tunisia was one of the few African countries to take part in the 1976 Montreal Games. In Montreal, athletes were not used, but swimmers took part for the first time. In addition, a Tunisian woman started for the first time in Montreal. Myriam Mizouni became the first female Olympic athlete in the country on July 18, 1976 in the 100-meter freestyle preliminary run. The country immediately joined the US-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games .
1984 to 2000
Tunisian weightlifters took part for the first time in Los Angeles in 1984 . In boxing Lotfi Belkhir reached the quarterfinals in the light welterweight division. In Seoul in 1988 , Tunisian table tennis players made their Olympic debut. The football selection met in the preliminary round on the team of the Federal Republic of Germany, which later won bronze, and lost 1: 4. The 1992 games in Barcelona , where a sports sailor competed for the first time, were unsuccessful for the Tunisian team.
It was not until 1996 in Atlanta that a medal could be celebrated again. The boxer Fathi Missaoui won bronze light welterweight. In athletics, Ali Hakimi reached the final over 1500 meters and finished eighth. A Tunisian tennis player took part for the first time in Atlanta. Tunisian rowers made their Olympic debut in Sydney in 2000 . The team was also unsuccessful in Sydney.
2004 until today
In 2004 in Athens , Tunisian Taekwondo and a gymnast competed for the first time. The swimmer Oussama Mellouli reached the final over 400 meter medley and finished 5th. In the women's weightlifting, Hayet Sassi reached 4th place in the middleweight division. The Taekwondoin Hicham Hamdouni could reach the quarterfinals in the welterweight division. The saber fencer Azza Besbès also reached the quarter-finals .
After 40 years, a Tunisian Olympic victory was celebrated again in Beijing in 2008 . Oussama Mellouli won the 1500 meter freestyle final after finishing fifth in the 400 meter freestyle. The boxer Walid Cherif reached the quarterfinals in the flyweight division.
Basketball players and canoeists competed for the first time in London in 2012 . Oussama Mellouli won bronze in the 1500 meter freestyle and was Olympic champion in 10 km open water swimming. Mellouli is Tunisia's first double Olympic champion. He is also the first swimmer to achieve Olympic victories both indoors (1500 meters in Beijing 2008) and outdoors (10 km open water in 2012 in London). The athlete Habiba Ghribi took second place in the 3000 meter obstacle race. The winner, Russian Julija Saripowa , was convicted of doping and disqualified in 2015. Ghribi moved up accordingly and was subsequently declared Olympic champion on June 4, 2016. The boxer Maroua Rahali reached the quarterfinals in the flyweight division. The Tunisian female fencer also achieved top placements. In the foil Inès Boubakri was sixth, the sword fencer Sarra Besbès eighth, her sister Azza Besbès ninth with the saber.
In Rio de Janeiro 2016 , the Tunisian team won three bronze medals. Inès Boubakri won her medal in foil fencing, Marwa Amri in freestyle wrestling in the 58 kg class and Oussama Oueslati in welterweight taekwondo. Beach volleyball players from Tunisia competed for the first time in Rio de Janeiro.
