Georgia , whose NOK , the Georgian National Olympic Committee , was founded in 1989 andrecognizedby the IOC in1993, has participated in all Olympic Games, winter and summer games, since 1994. Athletes from Georgia competedfor the Soviet Olympic team from 1952 to 1988during the Soviet Union . In 1992 Georgian athletes wereintegrated intothe CIS team.

A total of 138 athletes, including 27 women, competed. Athletes from Georgia have won 25 medals so far, all at summer games. The first medal winner was the judoka Soso Liparteliani on July 23, 1996 , who won the bronze medal in the light middleweight division. The first Olympic champion in Georgia was the judoka Surab Swiadauri on August 18, 2004 with his middleweight victory. The only woman with a medal is the marksman Nino Salukwadze , who won bronze with an air pistol in 2008, 20 years after her Olympic victory for the Soviet Union with a sports pistol.

The youngest member of a Georgian team in 2010 was the figure skater Allison Reed . The native American started at the age of 15. The sailor Guram Biganishvili was the oldest starter in 1996 at the age of 46.

Nodar Kumaritashvili

On February 12, 2010, the luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili had a fatal accident while training for the individual competition at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games . The accident happened just hours before the opening ceremony. The Georgian tobogganist is considered to be the fourth qualified participant in the Winter Olympics to die in preparation for his competition.

Nodar Kumaritashvili is not listed in the IOC lists of participants, so the number of participants for the athletes in the Vancouver Games is also given in the above list as six.
