Turkmenistan , whose NOK , the Türkmenistanyň Milli Olimpiýa komiteti , was founded in 1990 andrecognizedby the IOC in1993, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1996. Athletes from Turkmenistan competedfor the Soviet Olympic team from 1952 to 1988during the Soviet Union . In 1992, Turkmen athletes wereintegrated intothe CIS team. So far, they have not participated in the winter games. Young athletes have competed in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

Overview

Summer games

The first Turkmen Olympic team in Atlanta in 1996 consisted of track and field athletes, boxers, wrestlers, judoka, shooters and table tennis players. The wrestler Rosi Redschepow was on July 21, 1996 the first Turkmen Olympian. On the same day, the judoka Olisija Nasarenko, the first woman in Turkmenistan to compete in the Olympic Games.

At the following summer games, Turkmen athletes were also represented in the sports of weightlifting (from 2000) and swimming (from 2004).

In 2000 in Sydney the shooter Igor Pirekajew finished prone with the small bore rifle in 7th place. Also in 2004 in Athens the weightlifter Ümürbek Bazarbaýew took 7th place in the featherweight division. The same result was achieved in 2008 in Beijing by Tolkunbek Hudaýbergenow , also in the featherweight division. Bazarbaýew climbed to 6th place in London in 2012.

Youth games

Five youths, three boys and two girls, took part in the sports of boxing, judo, weightlifting and swimming at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. The boxer Nursähet Passiýew won the bronze medal in the welterweight division. Another medal that is not taken into account in the Turkmen medal balance was won by the judoka Yennet Geldibajewa. In the mixed team Belgrade she won silver.

In the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , three teenagers participated, two boys and one girl. The athletes competed in swimming, weightlifting and wrestling, but could not win a medal.
