Günter Giel

Günter Giel (born September 7, 1929 , † July 7, 1988 ) was a German police officer. He was Lieutenant General and Deputy Minister of the Interior of the GDR .

Life

Giel became a member of the SED in 1946 and of the German People's Police in 1947 . He then worked for more than two decades in the passport and registration system of the Ministry of the Interior, from March 1964 deputy head and from 1971 to 1974 as successor to Werner Reuther head of this main department. He completed his studies with a degree in political science and in January 1974 became Deputy Minister of the Interior of the GDR, with responsibility for the fire brigade, penal system, internal affairs and state archives. He was named major general in October 1974 and promoted to lieutenant general in 1981. In 1986 he was a member of the GDR electoral commission for the elections to the People's Chamber, the Berlin City Council, and the district days. In February 1987 he was replaced as Deputy Minister of the Interior for health reasons and replaced by Dieter Winderlich .

Giel died at the age of 58 years from the effects of major surgery and was on the Central Cemetery in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde in the graves plant for the victims and persecuted by the Nazi regime buried.
