Saudi Arabia , whose NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya al-ʿarabiyya as-saʿudiyya , was founded in 1964 andrecognizedby the IOC in1965, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1972. In 1980 the call to boycott the Moscow Games was followed. Saudi Arabian athletes have never participated in the winter games. Young athletes competed in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

Up until the 2008 Games, Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar were the only countries that did not allow women to compete in the Olympics, which sparked controversy with the IOC. In particular, Anita DeFrantz , chairwoman of the IOC Women's Commission, threatened to exclude these countries from the Olympic Games if they did not allow women. After Qatar had agreed to take part in the London Games, the NOK of Saudi Arabia followed suit and announced in June 2012 that it would be sending two female athletes to London.

Overview

With a team of ten athletes, Saudi Arabia first took part in the Olympic Games in 1972. The sprinter Mansour Al-Juaid was the first Saudi Olympian on July 31, 1972. At the following summer games, Saudi athletes participated in fencing, shooting, archery, cycling and football (from 1984), swimming and table tennis (from 1992), horse riding and weightlifting (from 1996), taekwondo (from 2000) and in judo (from 2012 )

In 1984 a Saudi team qualified for the soccer tournament for the first time. The team was eliminated after three defeats in the preliminary round. The Saudis suffered a 6-0 defeat against the team of the Federal Republic of Germany, the highest defeat in the entire tournament.

The first medals were won in 2000. In athletics, Hadi Soua'an Al-Somaily won silver in the 400 meter hurdles. In show jumping, Chalid al-'Aid won the bronze medal in the individual ranking with his horse Kashm al-Aʿan . The Taekwondoin Khaled Al-Dosari finished fourth in the heavyweight division.

In 2008 the athlete Hussain Taher Al-Sabee reached the final in the long jump and took 11th place. In 2012, the show jumping team ensured the next successes. In the individual ranking, Kamal Bahamdan took fourth place on his horse Noblesse des Tess . With the team he won the bronze medal. For the first time, two of the country's women took part in the Summer Olympics in London. Judoka Wojdan Shaherkani was Saudi Arabia's first female summer Olympian on August 3, 2012, followed a few days later by track and field athlete Sarah Attar .

Youth games

Nine teenage athletes, eight boys and one girl, competed in the sports of track and field, horse riding, swimming and weightlifting in the first Singapore Youth Olympic Games in 2010 . The show jumping rider Dalma Rushdi Malhas is regarded as the first Olympic athlete , as she competed in the youth games two years before Wojdan Shaherkani and Sarah Attar. With her horse Flash Top Hat she won the bronze medal in the individual competition.

At the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , five young people, all boys, took part in athletics, horse riding and taekwondo. In the pole vault, Hussain Al-Hizam took 4th place.
