Anita DeFrantz

Anita DeFrantz (born October 4, 1952 in Philadelphia ) is a former American rower . She has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1986 .

Anita DeFrantz was the first black woman to row for the USA at the Olympic Games. At the Olympic premiere of women's rowing at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she rowed in the American eighth and won the bronze medal. Two years later she won silver in a four-man with helmsman at the Rowing World Championships in 1978. In 1980 she was nominated for the American Olympic team, but was not allowed to participate because of the Olympic boycott.

Anita DeFrantz studied law in Connecticut and at Pennsylvania State University , where she received her PhD in 1977. She was a member of the organizing committee for hosting the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and has headed the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles since 1987 , which administers the net proceeds of the 1984 Olympic Games. From 1993 to 2013 she was Vice President of the World Rowing Federation (FISA).

In 1986, Anita DeFrantz was the fifth woman and the first black woman to be elected to the IOC. She served on the IOC Executive Committee from 1992 to 1997, after which she was Vice President for five years. In 2001 she ran for IOC President, but was defeated by Jacques Rogge . In 2013, DeFrantz was elected Vice-Chair of the IOC. 1980 she was awarded the United States Sports Academy in Daphne the honorary doctorate .
