Chalid Abdulaziz al-'Aid ( Arabic خالد العيد, DMG Ḫālid al-ʿAid , often transcribed as Khaled Al Eid in English ; * January 2, 1969 in Riyadh ) is a show jumper from Saudi Arabia .

Career

At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Al Eid, who had hardly appeared internationally until then, surprisingly won the bronze medal in show jumping on Kashm al-Aʿan . This makes him the first Arab to win a medal at an Olympic horse show.

Four years earlier he had already taken part in the 1996 Olympic show jumping competitions for Saudi Arabia , where he was also 30th in the individual standings with Kashm al-Aʿan and 18th with the team.

He also took part in the World Equestrian Games in 2002 (with Kashm al-Aʿan 69th in the individual ranking and 18th with the team) and in the Asian Games in 2006. In the latter, he won the gold medal with Alriyadh with the team and reached tenth place in the individual standings.

Al-'Aid is mainly active as a rider in the Arabian region, so he won the World Cup competitions in Alexandria 2005 (with Alriyadh ), Jeddah 2005 (with Alriyadh ), Sharjah 2006 (with Lucky Star ), Riyadh 2006 (with Alriyadh ) 'Al-Budayyi' 2007 (with Silvano ), Damascus 2007, Dubai 2008, Abu Dhabi 2009 and Damascus 2009 (each with Alriyadh ). He also celebrated one of his greatest successes outside of championships in September 2010 when he won the Gijón Grand Prix (CSIO 5 *) with Presley Boy .

At the World Equestrian Games in 2010 he reached 8th place with Presley Boy with the team and 12th place in the individual. After the first round of the team competition, he was still in the lead in the individual standings. Also with Presley Boy he took part in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. Here he achieved the bronze rank in the individual ranking and also won gold with the team. In December 2011 he won team gold with Vanhoeve at the Pan-Arab Games in Doha and was fourteenth in singles.

Unauthorized medication

At the end of May 2012, al-'Aid, along with his compatriot Abdullah Sharbatly , was banned by the FEI for eight months with retroactive effect from February 24, 2012. The reason was the discovery of forbidden medications in a doping test of al-'Aids horse Vanhoeve , here the substances phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone were detected. Both challenged the judgment before the CAS , which shortened the bans to two months each for al-'Aid and Sharbatly. The reason given was the lesser severity of the offense. The judgment has been criticized on various occasions, including the International Jumping Riders Club as a representative of the interests of show jumpers active in international top-class sport. He claims to have taken note of the CAS ruling with surprise, as heavier penalties would have been imposed in earlier times compared with similar incidents. The principle of equality for all riders should be guaranteed. It is also about the credibility of the CAS, at a moment when the FEI is running an extensive clean sport program.
