Guatemala , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Guatemalteco , was founded in 1947 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, first sent athletes to the Summer Olympics in 1952. From 1968 on, Guatemala took part in all summer games. For the only time to date, a delegation was sent to the Winter Games in 1988. In 2010 and 2014, the country took part in the Youth Summer Games.

Summer games

The painter Antonia Matos submitted the painting Course of Pirogues to the 1932 Olympic Art Competitions . The picture received an honorable mention in the painting category.

The first Olympic team in Guatemala consisted of athletes, cyclists, fencers, shooters, swimmers and weightlifters in Helsinki in 1952. The first Olympians in the country were on July 20, 1952, the wrestlers Oswaldo Johnston, Marco Girón and Aristides Pérez and the athletes José Julio Barillas, Victorio Solares and Luis Velásquez . On July 21st, sprinter Graviola Ewing became the first woman in Guatemala to take part in the Olympic Games.

It was not until 16 years later, in 1968 in Mexico City, that Guatemala took part in the Olympic Games again. This time there were boxers, weightlifters and a soccer team. With two wins in three preliminary round games, u. a. a 1-0 over Czechoslovakia, the football team qualified for the quarter-finals. Here they were defeated by the Hungarians, the later Olympic champions, with 0: 1.

In 1976, Guatemalans were represented for the first time in riding and sailing. In shooting, Edgardo Zachrisson reached 6th place in skeet shooting. In 1980 Moscow rowers took part for the first time. Oswaldo Mendéz was fourth in show jumping. In 1988 in Seoul a Guatemalan gymnast competed for the first time, in 1992 in Barcelona a modern pentathlon, in 1996 in Atlanta a badminton player, a canoeist and two judoka. 8th place in Atlanta was achieved by the marksmen Sergio Sánchez with the free pistol and Attila Solti on the target.

In 2000 in Sydney a Taekwondoin from Guatemala was used for the first time. In 2004, the Taekwondo Heidy Juarez reached fourth place in the middleweight division. The first medal was won in London in 2012. The walker Erick Barrondo won the silver medal over 20 kilometers.

Winter games

For the first and so far only time, Guatemala took part in the Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988. Six winter sports enthusiasts competed in alpine and cross-country skiing. The first winter Olympians were the brothers Dag and Ricardo Burgos on February 15, 1988, who competed in cross-country skiing. The first Guatemalan woman at the Winter Games was cross-country skier Fiamma Smith.

Youth games

Guatemala took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with twelve young people . The shooter Geraldine Solórzano won the bronze medal with the air pistol. The gymnast Ana Sofia Goméz was fifth in the all-around event and also reached two apparatus finals. She finished fourth on the balance beam and on the floor.

In 2014 in Nanjing , 20 young people took part. Two participants won bronze medals in mixed teams. These medals are counted towards the medal table of the mixed teams. Stefanie Brand won bronze in show jumping with the North American show jumping team. The shooter Wilmar Madrid also won bronze in the air pistol team.

Members of the IOC

Guatemala has an IOC member. The diplomat and businessman Willi Kaltschmitt Luján was elected an IOC member in 1988. He has been a board member since 2012.
