General overview

Summer games

In 1956, athletes from Fiji competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. The five-man team consisted of athletes, boxers and sailors. Subsequently, Fijian Olympic starters took on swimming, cycling and judo (since 1984), weightlifting (since 1996), archery and shooting (since 2004), and table tennis, soccer and rugby sevens (since 2016).

The first Olympians in Fiji were on November 24, 1956 the boxers Thomas Schuster in the light welterweight and Hector Hatch in the welterweight. The first woman in Fiji at the Olympic Games was the long jumper Miriama Tuisorisori on July 23, 1976, who also took part in the pentathlon .

Anthony Philp achieved his first success in 1992 when he finished 10th in windsurfing. When he participated in 2000 he was able to repeat this placement.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Fiji's largest Olympic team started with 53 athletes. The majority of the team were made up of the men's and women's rugby teams and the men's national football team, which was eliminated without a win in the preliminary round. The team lost u. a. 0:10 against the German Olympic team. They were 1-0 up against Mexico until the break, but lost the game 5-1 at the end. In rugby, however, Fiji was able to win the first medal at the Olympic Games, which also meant the island nation's first Olympic victory. After three preliminary round victories against Brazil, Argentina and the USA, the Fijians also won their quarter-final against New Zealand and their semi-final against Japan. In the final against the United Kingdom they won 43: 7.

Winter games

Athletes from Fiji took part in the Winter Olympics three times. Cross-country skier Rusiata Rogoyawa was the first Fijian winter Olympic athlete in Calgary on October 19, 1988 in the 15-kilometer race. Rogoyawa was also there in 1994 in Lillehammer. In 2002 in Salt Lake City, alpine ski racer Laurence Thoms took part.

The athlete Leipani Naivalu won the bronze medal with the mixed relay, consisting of four runners from four nations. This medal is not taken into account in Fiji's medal table.

In 2014 in Nanjing , 26 teenage athletes, 15 boys and 11 girls, took part. They competed in track and field, swimming, weightlifting, and hockey and rugby sevens. The boys' rugby team won the bronze medal.
