Honduras , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Hondureño , was founded in 1956 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1968. In 1972 they did not participate, in 1980 they joined the boycott of the Moscow Games. 1992 was the only time that the Winter Games took part. Young athletes have been sent to the two youth summer games held so far.
General overview
Summer games
The first Honduras Olympic team consisted of six athletes in Mexico City in 1968. The country's first Olympian was the 10,000-meter runner Rodolfo Erazo on October 13, 1968. No team was sent to the 1972 games in Munich. Honduras followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games. 1984 in Los Angeles for the first time Honduran swimmers and a judoka took part. On July 29, 1984, the first woman from Honduras to take part in the Olympic Games, the swimmer María Lardizábal.
The first Honduran boxers were used in Seoul in 1988, the first female fencer and weightlifter in Barcelona in 1992. In 2000 in Sydney for the first time a U-23 national soccer team from Honduras took part in the Olympic tournament. With a win, a draw and a defeat, the team failed in the preliminary round. In 2004 in Athens a Honduran table tennis player took part for the first time, in 2008 a taekwondo and a rower, in 2012 in London a shooter and a wrestler. A 1-0 win over Spain and two draws brought the men's football selection to the quarter-finals. Here they lost 3-2 to Brazil.
Again in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the footballers achieved the best result. With a win, a draw and a defeat, Honduras qualified for the quarter-finals due to the better goal difference against Argentina. Here South Korea was defeated 1-0. In the semifinals there was a duel against hosts Brazil. With 0: 6 Honduras was outclassed. The bronze match against Nigeria was then lost 3-2.
Winter games
Honduras took part in the Winter Olympics once, in 1992 in Albertville. The first and so far only Honduran winter athlete was cross-country skier Jenny Palacios-Stillo , who competed over 15 kilometers on February 9, 1992.
Youth games
Honduras took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with three teenagers . Judoka Kevin Fernández won the bronze medal with the mixed team. This medal will be added to the medal balance of the mixed teams. In 2014 in Nanjing , 21 young people took part, including a soccer selection.
