Table tennis

In table tennis, an Olympic sport since 1988, the People's Republic of China is the leading nation. Out of 32 possible Olympic victories, Chinese athletes achieved 28. Only in the men's singles (1988, 1992 and 2004) and in the women's doubles (1988) could athletes from other nations prevail.
Two gold, two silver and one bronze medal were the result of China at the first tournament in 1988 in Seoul. In the men's doubles, Chen Longcan and Wei Qingguang won the gold medal. They were the first Chinese Olympic champions in table tennis. In the women's singles, all three medals went to China. Chen Jing won ahead of Li Huifen and Jiao Zhimin . Li had eliminated the German Olga Nemes in the round of 16 . Chen Jing and Jiao Zhimin took silver in women's doubles.
In 1992 in Barcelona three gold, two silver and one bronze medal followed. In the men's category, the Lü Lin and Wang Tao doubles won the final against the German doubles Jörg Roßkopf and Steffen Fetzner . Ma Wenge won bronze in the singles . There were two double victories for women. Deng Yaping won the singles ahead of Qiao Hong . Qiao had defeated Elke Schall from Germany in the group stage . In doubles, Deng Yaping and Qiao Hong won ahead of Chen Zihe and Gao Jun . Chen and Gao defeated the German doubles Elke Schall and Nicole Struse in the group stage .
In 1996 in Atlanta all Olympic table tennis champions were Chinese. Of the twelve medals, eight went to China. The men celebrated two double victories. In singles, Liu Guoliang won ahead of Wang Tao, the 1992 Olympic champion in doubles. Liu was able to defeat the German Jörg Roßkopf in the semifinals. In doubles, Liu Guoliang and Kong Linghui won gold ahead of Lü Lin and Wang Tao. In the group stage, Lü and Wang won their game against the Chinese-born Austrian doubles Ding Yi and Qian Qianli. In the semifinals they met the German doubles Jörg Roßkopf and Steffen Fetzner and were able to beat them. For women, Deng Yaping was able to repeat her Olympic victory in individual from 1992. Qiao Hong also won bronze. In the quarterfinals Deng eliminated the German Nicole Struse, in the semifinals the third Chinese Liu Wei , who lost the bronze medal against Qiao. In the final, she met Chen Jing, the 1988 Olympic champion, who is now starting for Chinese Taipei . An incident occurred during the final. Two Taiwanese supporters rolled out and waved the flag of the Republic of China . This flag was not recognized by the IOC for the Olympic Games, the two spectators were arrested by the police. Deng Yaping and Qiao Hong repeated their Olympic victory in Barcelona in doubles. With that, Deng won her fourth gold medal and was the most successful Chinese table tennis player at the Olympic Games. Liu Wei and Qiao Yunping won silver.
Also in Sydney in 2000 all disciplines were won by the Chinese. Again, China won eight out of twelve medals. In the men's category, Kong Linghui was Olympic champion in singles, Liu Guoliang won bronze. In the quarterfinals, Kong defeated the Austrian Werner Schlager and Liu the German Jörg Roßkopf . In doubles, Wang Liqin and Yan Sen won ahead of Kong and Liu. In the women's category, Wang Nan was the individual Olympic champion ahead of Li Ju . Since it had become normal for the Chinese to compete for other nations, there were purely Chinese duels in the group stage and in the other rounds as well. Wang Nan met Chen Jing in the semi-finals, the third Chinese failed in the first main round at Jing Junhong, who started for Singapore . In doubles, Li Ju and Wang Nan won ahead of Sun Jin and Yang Ying . Li and Wang were able to defeat the German duo Elke Schall and Nicole Struse in the round of 16.
In Athens 2004, the Chinese team achieved four possible Olympic victories. Gold went to the male duo of Chen Qi and Ma Lin . In the women's category , Zhang Yining was the individual Olympic champion. In doubles, Wang Nan and Zhang Yining won gold, Guo Yue and Niu Jianfeng took bronze.
At the domestic summer games in Beijing in 2008, the doubles for women and men were canceled, but a team classification consisting of two singles and one double was introduced. China provided all Olympic champions, and all medals in both individual competitions went to Chinese athletes. In the men's race, Ma Lin was the Olympic champion, beating Wang Hao in the final. Wang Liqin took bronze. Wang Liqin was able to defeat Austrian Werner Schlager in the round of 16. The team won the final after a 3-0 win over Germany. In the preliminary round, China had beaten Austria 3-0. In the women's category, Zhang Yining was Olympic champion, repeating her 2004 victory. She defeated Wang Nan in the final. Bronze went to Guo Yue. The women's team won the final 3-0 against Singapore. In the preliminary round, Austria's team was beaten 3-0. Wang Nan and Zhang Yining were team members and both won their fourth gold medal. Zhang Yining caught up with Deng Yaping, China’s most successful table tennis player at the Olympic Games to date. Wang Nan overtook the two with her additional silver medal.
A similar picture emerged in London in 2012. Once again, China provided all Olympic champions. This time there were double victories in the singles. In the men's race, Zhang Jike won , who defeated Wang Hao in the final. Wang had eliminated the Austrian Werner Schlager in the third round. Zhang met the German Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the semifinals and defeated him. The team defeated Germany 3-1 in the semifinals and became Olympic champion after a 3-0 win in the final over South Korea. In the women's category , Li Xiaoxia won the gold medal. In the final, she beat Ding Ning . The team reached the final and beat Japan 3-0.
The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were just as successful. Ma Long was the men's Olympic champion. In the final, he defeated defending champion Zhang Jike . The team reached the final against Japan without losing a game and won 3-1. This time, Ding Ning won the women's race ahead of Li Xiaoxia. Ding had beaten the German-Chinese Han Ying in the quarter-finals . Like the men, the women's team made it to the final without losing a game. Opponent Germany was defeated 3-0.
