Liu Shiwen ( Chinese  刘诗 雯 , Pinyin Liú Shīwén , born April 12, 1991 in Liaoning ) is a Chinese table tennis player . She won eight World Cup gold medals in singles, doubles, mixed and with the team as well as five times the World Cup and three times the World Tour Grand Finals . Because of these successes she is considered one of the best table tennis players ever.

Career

Liu Shiwen first appeared internationally in 2004. At the Youth Asia Championship she won bronze in singles and gold in doubles and with the team, at the Youth World Championships silver in singles and gold in doubles, mixed and with the team. At the Asian Cup she finished 10th, in the world rankings she climbed to 95th place. In 2005 she played her first Pro Tour tournaments, in 2006 she won her first medal there when she reached the doubles semi-finals at the Croatia Open. She took part in her first adult world championship in 2007 , in doubles with Li Nan she reached the quarterfinals. By winning doubles with Guo Yue at the 2008 Korea Open, she won her first gold medal on the Pro Tour. In April 2008, the FSV Kroppach signed Liu Shiwen for some missions in the Bundesliga . With a 5-0 record, she made a contribution to winning the 2008/09 German championship.

In 2009 she became part of the world's best: She moved up to the top 10 in the world rankings, won bronze in singles at the World Cup , won singles and doubles in several Pro Tour tournaments and doubles at the Grand Finals. In addition, this year she took part in the World Cup for the first time , which she was able to win. In 2010 she was part of the Chinese national team, which surprisingly lost to Singapore in the final of the World Cup , and from January to September she took first place in the world rankings for the first time. Liu Shiwen won the Grand Finals in 2011 for the first time in singles, and she also won bronze at the World Championships . In 2012 she won gold again at the World Cup and the Grand Finals as well as her first World Cup gold with the team. The following year she won silver in singles and doubles at the 2013 World Cup, gold for the third time at the World Cup and gold for the third time in a row at the Grand Finals. As a result, she returned to number 1 in the world rankings for 13 months in September 2013. She won the 2014 World Cup with the Chinese team . In 2015 she became world champion in doubles and after a 3: 4 defeat in the final against Ding Ning she was vice-world champion in singles again. She won the World Cup for the fourth time in her fourth participation, which made her level with the record holders Zhang Yining and Wang Nan , and in the world rankings she was again at number 1 for eleven months from November 2015.

As part of the victorious Chinese team - but not individually - Liu Shiwen took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and won gold at the Team World Cup . At the 2017 World Cup , she was eliminated in singles in the semifinals, but won gold in doubles with Ding Ning. After losing to Zhu Yuling in the final, she finished second in both the Asian Cup and the World Cup . Since she only participated in five international tournaments in 2017, she fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 2009 with the introduction of the new world rankings in 2018. In the Chinese Super League 2017 she was the best player with a score of 28: 2. In May 2018 she became world champion again with the team , and in 2019 she became world champion in singles and mixed for the first time . In the same year she won the World Cup for the fifth time and set a new record.
