Kong Linghui
Kong Linghui ( Chinese 孔 令 輝 / 孔 令 辉 , Pinyin Kǒng Lìnghuī ; born October 18, 1975 in Harbin , Heilongjiang Province , People's Republic of China ) is a former Chinese table tennis player and today's trainer. He was Olympic champion in 2000 in individual.
Career
At the age of 7 he started intensive table tennis training. In 1994 he was accepted into the Chinese national team. In the same year he moved to the German Bundesliga , where he played for TTC Jülich in 1994/95 and for TTF Ochsenhausen in 1995/96 . Then he moved to Italy to Libertas Alfaterna. In 1999 he returned to Germany to the TTF Bad Honnef . However, his eligibility to play in Germany expired in January 2000 because he joined a Chinese club.
His greatest successes:
- 1st place in the individual and with the Chinese team at the WTTC 1995 in Tianjin (CHN). In the final, he beat the one year younger Chinese Liu Guoliang , who is currently the Chinese men's national coach.
- 1st place in the individual at the Olympic Summer Games 2000 in Sydney (AUS). In the final he beat Jan-Ove Waldner with 3-2 sets. Course: Kong won the first two sets. He awarded the 2-0 lead. The score was 2: 2, with both players playing great table tennis. In the last set, Waldner completely lost his form and was 3:10 behind. Thanks to some concentration holes of the Chinese, Waldner was able to catch up again at 12:15. But after China's "time-out", Kong extended his lead to 20:12. In the end, Kong won the set 21:13 and was Olympic champion in the men's singles until 2004. In 2004 he was replaced by the South Korean Ryu Seung Min .
In early 2006 he became the coach of the Chinese national team, and in October 2006 he retired. In 2012 he succeeded Shi Zhihao as the head coach of the Chinese women's national team. In 2017, Kong Linghui was suspended as a coach during the ongoing World Cup . He was accused of betting debts, and in 2006, while drunk, he caused a car accident.
