Ma Lin ( Chinese  馬 琳  /  马 琳 , Pinyin Mǎ Lín ; born February 19, 1980 in Shenyang , Liaoning Province , People's Republic of China ) is a former Chinese table tennis player . He is Olympic champion in men's singles, the most successful player in the World Cup tournament and seven-time world champion in men's doubles, mixed doubles and with the Chinese men's national team . He is considered one of the best table tennis players ever.

In 2010 he was inducted into the ITTF Hall of Fame .

Ma Lin has been one of the coaches for the Chinese men's national team since April 2017.

Career

Ma Lin started playing table tennis at the age of 6. Due to his talent for movement and feeling for the ball, a sports school noticed him at this time. So he moved to Shantou at the age of 12, since his local Liaoning provincial team did not accept him, to join the newly established city team there. After two years of training, Ma Lin became a member of the Chinese men's national team at the age of 14.

Two years later (1996) he achieved his first international success by reaching the semi-finals in the men's singles at the ITTF Pro Tour tournament in Belgrade. In the same year he won the first individual tournament at the Asian Cup. When he first participated in the World Cup in 1997, Ma Lin played in singles up to the round of 16. At the 1999 World Cup he improved and reached the individual finals, but lost against his compatriot and current men's national coach Liu Guoliang almost 3-2 in sets. In mixed doubles, however, he won the gold medal together with Zhang Yingying.

Despite good performance, Ma Lin was denied participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney. Ma Lin was only able to take part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . Although he was eliminated in singles in the round of 16, he won the gold medal in doubles together with Chen Qi .

Controversial was Ma Lin's participation in the final of the Champions League 2000, which he played with the club SVS Niederösterreich . Since he had already played for a Chinese club in the same season, the ETTU withdrew his license to play in order to give it to him shortly before the game began. His bet was without consequences as he lost both of his games without winning a set.

Ma Lin is three times vice world champion in singles (1999, 2005, 2007), which earned him the reputation of an "eternal runner-up" until his Olympic victory in 2008. He lost the last two World Cup finals against his long-term rival Wang Liqin - in 2007 after a 7-1 lead in the fifth set with a 3-1 lead, he still lost 3-4 in sets.

At the Tournament of Champions Ma Lin remained unsuccessful - although he qualified twice for the final tournament and once for the semi-final tournament: in 2006 he lost in the final against Wang Liqin, in 2007 he lost in the final against Wang Hao and lost in 2009 he in the semifinals against Wang Hao.

Ma Lin is more successful at the World Cup , which he is the only one to have won four times. After his first participation in 1998 , he was able to achieve first place in his second participation at the World Cup 2000 in the individual.

Ma Lin has won 18 world tournaments (Olympic Games, World Championship, World Cup) in all categories (singles, doubles, mixed doubles, team) so far (as of August 2012). In this regard, he is the most successful Asian table tennis player. He has a total of 20 wins in singles and 39 wins in doubles on the Pro Tour. Until today (as of August 2012) nobody could win that many tournaments in doubles at the Pro Tour tournaments.

Since 2001 Ma Lin has been a regular of the Chinese national team, with which he has since won four team world championships in a row (from 2001 to 2008) (world record held together with Wang Liqin), as well as the WTC World Team Cup 2007 in Magdeburg, two Pro Tour tournaments and the team competition held for the first time at the 2008 Olympic Games. In doubles he was world champion in 2007, in mixed doubles he won the world championship in 1999 and 2003. His greatest success finally came in 2008 at the Olympic Games in Beijing, when he defeated the then world number one Wang Hao 4-1 in sets in the individual final . With this third gold medal, he is currently the most successful athlete since table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988.

Ma Lin also plays in the Chinese Super League and was most recently under contract with Tianjin in the 2009 season. From 2000 to 2007, the club Ma Lin played for always won the men's championship. In 2012 he was signed by the Russian club UMMC Verkhnaya Pyshma (formerly Yekaterinburg).

In December 2013, Ma Lin retired from the Chinese national team.

Play style

Ma Lin's style of play is based on well thought-out and aggressive offensive tactics. Like most Chinese table tennis players in the past, he plays a modified Chinese penholder style . As usual in the classic variant, he mostly plays the backhand with the same side of the club as the forehand. But beyond that, it also offers the reverse penholder backhand (Reverse Penhold backhand), in which the other side is used bat. However, this technology is still relatively rare among the world's best. Ma Lin mainly uses the classic backhand for blocking, the reverse for playing topspins . The central stroke of his game system, however, is his aggressive forehand topspin, with which he initiates most of his attacks. Further strengths of his game are: among other things his excellent footwork, his dangerous serves, his soulful short-short game over the table, his safe block game and sometimes other types of strokes that he uses in his game. At the beginning of his career (1999-2000) Ma Lin played mostly a passive block and counter game, combined with a very safe balloon defense. Later (2001-2003) he played an aggressive offensive game at times. Only in 2004 he sat for the first time the reverse penholder backhand (Reverse Penhold backhand) regularly in the game and then became the modern offensive players.

Ma Lin uses a hard offensive blade ("Yasaka Ma Lin Carbon Off") with the rubbers "Skyline 2" on his forehand side, BryceFX on his backhand side.

Private

Ma Lin has been married to former gymnast Zhang Yaqing since December 2013. In April 2016 the couple had a boy.
