China did not take part in the first world championships before the Second World War , but from the 1950s it rose to become one of the world's strongest teams. The first World Cup medal was bronze in 1956 , and gold was won for the first time in 1961 . Two more world titles followed immediately before the team failed to compete in the world championships in 1967 and 1969. From the 1970s onwards, China established itself as the dominant team at the Asian Championships and Asian Games and was able to win all tournaments with a few exceptions. From 1971 to 1989, China was also represented in every World Cup final, but from the 1980s onwards it had to compete primarily with Sweden , which was world champion three times in a row between 1989 and 1993. For China it was only 7th place in 1991, but after that the final was not missed for a long time. The 2000 World Cup final against Sweden was the last defeat for the time being, between 2001 and 2018 the Chinese team won gold medals nine times in a row, and they also won all of the Olympic team competitions introduced in 2008.
