Table tennis world championship 2000
The 46th table tennis world championship for teams took place from February 19 to 26, 2000 in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
For the first time, only the team competitions were held at a world championship. The associated individual competitions were held in Eindhoven (Netherlands) as early as 1999 .
The reason for these peculiarities was political: Originally, the entire World Cup was planned in Belgrade ( Yugoslavia ). Because of the Kosovo war , this event was canceled. In the short term, the organization was reorganized and the individual World Championships 1999 in Eindhoven and the Team World Championships 2000 in Kuala Lumpur .
The audience response was disappointing. Around 6,000 visitors came on the last day of the match, and around 1,000 on the previous days.
Cutting off the Germans
Men's
Jörg Roßkopf was unable to play all games due to an injury . However, the German team was evenly cast and was able to compensate for its temporary loss.
In Group D, the team finished second after victories over Denmark (3: 1), Slovenia (3: 1), England (3: 0) and Poland (3: 2) and a 2: 3 defeat against Japan it beat the Czech Republic 3-2 and qualified for the quarter-finals. Here it was defeated by the eventual world champions Sweden 0: 3. This meant fifth place in the final bill.
Dirk Schimmelpfennig was the men's team's supervisor .
Ladies
The German team won all games in Group C: 3-1 against the Slovak Republic, 3-2 against Japan and 3-0 each against Italy, Yugoslavia and Croatia. With first place she went straight to the quarter-finals, where she was defeated 3-2 by the eventual vice world champions Taiwan. This also meant 5th place.
The women's team was supervised by Martin Adomeit .
ITTF Congress
- The ITTF Congress decides to increase the size of the table tennis ball from 38 mm Ø to 40 mm Ø. Reason: The ball should fly more slowly because of the increased air resistance and the rallies should be extended. The new ball will be used internationally from October 1st, 2000. Overall, one hopes for a more interesting game - also for television - through longer rallies. However, as the following years showed, the hoped-for media interest did not materialize. Table tennis remains attractive for television only with great difficulty.
- The future world championships will again be organized separately for team and individual competitions. Only in 2001 will there still be an "overall World Cup".
- At world championships, doubles may only be formed with athletes from the same association. "International" pairings are no longer permitted.
- A maximum of 7 active participants per nation can take part.
- The previous counting method - one sentence goes up to 21 - is being changed on a trial basis. At the men's World Cup in October 2000 , the decision sets up to 11 will be played.
