Liu Jia ( Chinese  刘佳 , Pinyin Liú Jiā ; born February 16, 1982 in Beijing , China ) is an Austrian table tennis player of Chinese origin. She moved to Austria in 1997 and was naturalized in 1998. In 2005 she won the European Championship in singles. She took part in five Olympic Games .

Life

From 1992 to 1995, Liu attended Shicha Hai Sports School boarding school in Beijing. After completing this school, she qualified for admission to the Shian Nuntan professional club . A close friend there was the later Olympic champion ( Athens 2004 ) and world champion ( Shanghai 2005 ) Zhang Yining . Liu won the student championship and took third place in the youth rankings. However, due to the tough competition from other Chinese players, she had little chance of international appearances. Life in the boarding school also dampened the joy of playing table tennis and her parents advised her to stop training and study instead. During this time she received an offer from Japan, which she did not accept. Finally, through her future coach Liu Yan Jun, the opportunity arose to travel to Austria, where she arrived in March 1997.

Without speaking German or English, but with the opportunity to play for the TTC Linz AG Froschberg club, she moved to Upper Austria. Within the first year she learned the German language and with the victory at the 1st International Austrian Youth Championships in Linz achieved her first sporting success after moving. On February 16, 1998, her 16th birthday, she was granted Austrian citizenship and accepted into the national team.

The 1.60 m tall and 49 kg heavy left-hander, soon to be called Susi in Austria , won several titles at European Youth Championships (1998 in singles, doubles with Ivana Weberova and mixed with Josef Simoncik (CZE), in 1999 in singles and mixed games Yu Kalun (NED)) and rose to the top 100 in the world rankings . Since 1999 she has been training as an army athlete in the Army Sports Center with the Army Performance Center (HSLZ) of the Austrian Armed Forces . The following year she reached the quarter-finals at the European Championships in singles and doubles and was able to qualify without defeat (world number 48) for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , where she reached the finals of the top 32. At the Team World Cup 2000 , she only lost one game.

This was followed by the quarterfinals at the 2001 World Championships in Osaka , several state championships and the bronze medal in mixed doubles (with Werner Schlager ) at the European Championships in 2002 in Zagreb . A shoulder injury in 2003 put Liu's further athletic career into question, but was cured during a stay of several months with Chinese doctors and therapists in China. In 2004 she improved, including a victory at the Malaysia Open table tennis championships, in the world rankings to 13th place and took part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

In 2005, she won the European table tennis championship and began to prepare for qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games in her hometown of Beijing, in which she participated as a member of the Austrian team . She reached round 3 in the singles. With the Austrian team she came second in Group A behind hosts China, but in the bronze play-off the team was eliminated from the tournament in round 1 against Japan.

For the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Liu was chosen as the flag bearer of the Austrian Olympic team.

In 2017 Liu Jia moved from Linz AG Froschberg to the German Bundesliga for club SV DJK Kolbermoor , which she left for TTC Linz AG Froschberg in 2020.
