Jill Hammersley
Jill Hammersley b. Shirley (born December 6, 1951 in Carshalton ) was the best English table tennis player in the 1970s . She won the European Championships in singles and doubles. She won three times in the European ranking tournament TOP-12.
National successes
Hammersley started playing table tennis when he was 10 years old. A little later she won the English championship of the "girls under eleven years". After a few years she became English youth champion.
From 1973 to 1976 she won the national English championship four times in a row. In 1981 she won the 7th title.
International success
From 1969 to 1981 Hammersley was represented at all seven world championships . Here she achieved her greatest success in 1973 when she reached the semi-finals in doubles with the Hungarian Beatrix Kisházi.
Between 1970 and 1982 she was nominated for all seven European championships . Here she won three silver medals: in 1972 in doubles with Beatrix Kisházi and in 1978 and 1982 in singles. She had her greatest success in 1976 in Prague when she won the European Championships in singles and doubles (with Linda Howard ). At the European ranking tournament Europe TOP-12 she took first place in 1978, 1980 and 1981. In 1977 and 1982 she came second.
In the ITTF world rankings Hammersley was led from mid-1976 to early 1977 in sixth place, in the European rankings in January 1976 she was number one.
Others
In 1971, 1973, and 1975, Hammersley won the Commonwealth Championships individually and with the team. In 1973 and 1975 she also won doubles. From the 1978/79 season Hammersley played with the club TSV Kronshagen in the German women's Bundesliga . In 1983 she ended her international career.
Private
On July 3, 1971, she married Nick Hammersley. In September 1982 she remarried, Donald Parker, and was then called Jill Parker . Her daughters, named Kate and Joanna , were also nominated for the England national team.
