Teyateyaneng , or TY for short , is the capital of the Berea District in Lesotho in southern Africa .

geography

Teyateyaneng is located about 40 kilometers north of the state capital Maseru on Main North One , the north parallel to the South African border . The city is located on a high plateau at an altitude of about 1600 meters. The name comes from the Teja-Tejane river that runs south of Teyateyaneng , in German: "quicksand".

The city's population rose to 22,200 by 2001. At that time, a total of over 50,000 people lived in the wider area. In the 2006 census, 61,475 inhabitants were determined.

history

Teyateyaneng was founded in 1886 as the capital of Berea District. The founder was Chief Masopha , a son of Moshoeshoe I who was known for his unprofessional authority. In return , the British administration gave him the right to his own headquarters and police. In 1975 the population was about 7,000. Since then it has grown rapidly. In 1986, the founding anniversary was celebrated with sports tournaments, t-shirts and a miss election.

Economy and Infrastructure

Teyaeteyaneng has a number of retail and weaving companies that produce tapestries. There are no industrial companies in the city. In addition to the usual authorities, Teyateyaneng has a hospital and - in the wider area - three high schools .

From Teyateyaneng buses and shared taxis go to Maseru and north. Other lines run towards Mapoteng and Ha Mateka, both in an easterly direction at the foot of the Maloti Mountains . As usual in Lesotho, there is no timetable here either.

Attractions

In the vicinity of the city there are several rock caves and slopes with cave paintings of the San . The pictures represent hunters and prey.

Sports

The Lioli FC is a football club from Teyateyaneng that in the many years first Lesotho League permitting. The championship has already been won five times, most recently in 2016. Lioli means ' the bearded vulture ' in German .
