The area was already settled in the Mesolithic era. It was first mentioned in writing in 1542. In 1543 it was sold by its previous owners Friedrich and Georg Smolík von Slawitz to Sebastian von Weitmühl , whose family sold it to Diwisch von Michalowitz in 1586 . They were confiscated from him in the 1620s and sold to Wilhelm Popel von Lobkowitz the Younger in 1622. The village remained in the possession of the Lobkowitz family until the reform in 1848.

About 16 families lived in the village in the 17th century, mostly farmers and day laborers ( cottagers ). In the 19th century there were around 210 inhabitants. During the period of industrialization and coal mining, the majority of the population found their purchase in the Grohmann mine . The population grew to 994 by 1900 and to 1811 in 1930. Bartelsdorf was demolished in 1976 as coal mining continued.

In the village there was a chapel of St. John of Nepomuk from 1712, with a Renaissance pulpit from 1600. The statues of this pulpit are now in the church in Litvínov . The sculptural group of St. Ulrich and St. Felix from the portal of the chapel is now on the side wall of the parish church of St. Archangel Michael in Litvínov (Oberleutensdorf).
