Valentina Popovová (originally Russian Валентина Ивановна Попова , Walentina Ivanovna Popowa, English transcription Valentina Popova; born November 21, 1960 in Sumqayıt , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a former Soviet and Slovak table tennis player . She was nine-time European champion in the 1980s.

youth

In 1968 Popova began to play table tennis. At that time she trained in Baku under Jurij Oparin, later under Nikolai Novikow.

In 1974 she won gold with the team at the European Schools Championship in Göppingen; in the individual she failed in the semifinals to Gabriella Szabó . At the European Youth Championships she reached second place several times: 1975 (behind Gordana Perkučin ), 1976 (behind Tatjana Romachina) and 1977 (behind Bettine Vriesekoop ). With the team she won the title in 1975, 1976 and 1978. She won doubles in 1977 and 1978 (both with Narine Antonyan ).

Adults

From 1977 to 1981 Popova won the Soviet national title five times in a row.

At the European Championships she got her first title in 1976, in the team competition. In 1980 she won gold in singles, doubles (with Narine Antonyan ) and with the team. In 1984 she won all four competitions, singles, doubles (with Narine Antonyan), mixed (with Jacques Secrétin ) and with the team. At the EM 1986 Popowa could only be used in a team because the federation had failed to register them for the individual competitions. She got her last European title in a team competition in 1988.

In 1992 Popova left Azerbaijan with her family because of the unrest there and moved to Slovakia in Bratislava. From the beginning of 1994 she was eligible to play for Slovakia. Here she won the 1996 Slovak championship in singles and doubles (with Zuzana Poliačková ).

Between 1977 and 2001 she took part in 13 world championships , five of them for Slovakia. She played the Olympic Games in 1988 for the USSR, in 1992 for the United Team and in 1996 for Slovakia.

In 2005 she was once again European champion in the singles over 40s.

In the 2000s she played in the Austrian Bundesliga, a. a. at the clubs SVS Niederösterreich , SV Schwechat and SCO Bodensdorf.

Popovová was the coach of the Slovak women's national team for the 2014 World Table Tennis Championships .

Valentina Popova is currently working as a junior coach at SVS Schwechat.

Private

Valentina Popovová graduated from the Faculty of Philology at the University of Azerbaijan. She has been married to a journalist since 1985 and has a son (* 1985). She speaks German.
