The 17th table tennis world championship took place from January 29 to February 5, 1950 in Budapest (Hungary) in the Volksstadion ( Hungarian Népstadion ).

Germany did not participate, but both the FRG and the GDR applied for membership at the ITTF Congress. The world association ITTF refused separate admission and insisted on a uniform appearance for Germany.

Worth mentioning

  • In the sports hall, banners were attached to all the walls, conveying the fact that this event is about world peace. Even so, the Yugoslav representative Velkovic, who was supposed to represent his country at the ITTF Congress, was asked to leave the country with his wife and children within 24 hours.
  • The men's team games ended on February 1, and the individual games began on February 2. All Austrian players, except Trude Pritzi, were beaten - and Pritzi was lucky because her opponent Zelenkova did not play.
  • Elimination of the Austrians: Pritzi lost to Rozeanu 2: 3; In the doubles Bergmann-Barna won 3: 1 over Bednar-Just and Sidó-Soós over Schuech-Jejenti (AUT-IND) 3: 0 and in the mixed doubles Bergmann-Thomann over Bednar-Pritzi 3: 2.
  • Rozeanu became world champion with 22:20, 21:15, 21:18 without losing a set; Bergmann's victory was 12:21, 15:18 (timeout), 21:14, 21:14, 21:13 - he delivered a tactically excellent game that lasted 2 hours. Sidó-Farkas won with 21:17, 21:18, 21:12, Sidó-Soós with 15:21, 21:16, 21:13, 21:18 and finally Beregi-Elliot with 13:21, 21:11, 21:19, 21:17.
  • The ITTF Congress decided to award the 1951 World Championships to Vienna (with the additional remark that this is done on the condition that Austria accepts this contract).
