József Kóczián
József Kóczián [ ˈjoːʒɛf ˈkoːtsiaːn ] (born August 4, 1926 in Budapest , † December 10, 2009 ) was a Hungarian table tennis player . He was a three-time world champion.
Success in Hungary
Kóczián was a defender. He was four times Hungarian champion in singles, namely in 1949, 1950, 1952 and 1955. He also won the title five times in doubles (1949, 1951–1953, 1955) and in 1953 and 1954 in mixed. From 1947 to 1955 he was nominated eight times for world championships . In 1953 he became world champion in doubles with Ferenc Sidó . With the Hungarian team he won the title in 1949 and 1952 . He won silver in 1952 in singles, in 1951 in doubles with Ferenc Sidó and in 1950 , 1951 and 1953 with the team.
In the ITTF world rankings , he finished fifth in 1951/52.
Emigration to Germany and Sweden
At the end of 1956, Kóczián emigrated to Germany. He came to Aschaffenburg via the Friedland refugee camp, where he joined the TuS Damm association. With the help of this reinforcement, the men's team of this club was promoted to the national league. As a result, he won several tournaments, and he was used several times in the Bavarian team.
In 1957 Kóczián moved to the upper division club Post SV Augsburg . In December 1957 he competed in Sweden at the International Swedish Championships. After that he did not return to Germany.
At the 1959 World Cup , he competed in individual competitions under the flag of Sweden.
Private
József Kóczián's sister Éva Kóczián was also a world-class table tennis player.
