Hugo Urchetti

Hugo Urchetti (born May 10, 1919 in Luino ; † August 5, 2004 in Geneva ) was a Swiss table tennis player and official. In the 1940s and 1950s he was the leading player in Switzerland. For his services to table tennis he was awarded the ITTF Merit Award .

Hugo Urchetti initially did cycling (Velo) and tennis before he concentrated on table tennis. He won numerous titles at the Swiss National Championships : from 1942 to 1964 he was champion 16 times in singles, 19 times in doubles and 13 times in mixed. With TTC Silver Star Geneva he was from 1936 to 1963 every year, with the exception of 1943, Swiss team champion, a total of 27 times. At the International Swiss Championships between 1937 and 1955 he won nine times in singles, eleven times in doubles and ten times in mixed.

Urchetti was nominated a total of eight times between 1947 and 1957 for participation in world championships , where he was fifth with the Swiss team in 1950 .

Hugo Urchetti was president of the Swiss club TTC Silver Star Geneva for 57 years , where he also took care of youth training and the promotion of young talent. In 1967 he was one of the co-founders of the Swaythling Club International . From 1963 to 1969 and 1972 to 1975 he was President of the Swiss Table Tennis Association (STTV). Here he coordinated the cooperation between the eight regional associations. He also campaigned for table tennis to become an Olympic sport. For this, the International Olympic Committee IOC awarded him the Olympic Medal in 2000 . As early as 1989 the world association ITTF recognized his services and presented him with the ITTF Merit Award .

Private

Hugo Urchetti's father was northern Italian, his mother came from Ticino. In the mid-1950s he married the Swiss national player Marie-Jeanne. He earned his living as CFO at Givaudan .
