Yoo Nam-kyu (born June 4, 1968 in Busan ) is a retired South Korean table tennis player . He is the first Olympic champion in men's singles.
Career
At the age of 10, Yoo Nam-kyu started playing table tennis against his father's wishes. Success came quickly. The left-handed penholder player first caused a sensation in professional circles in 1986 when he won the Asian Games against the then world champion Jiang Jialiang . In 1999 he stepped down from the international stage. From May 2005 to December 2007 he was the head coach of the men's national team of South Korea. After retiring from this post, he returned in July 2008 and stayed until January 2010.
successes
Between 1987 and 1999 he took part in all seven world championships . In 1987 he reached the semi-finals in doubles with Ahn Jae-hyung . In 1989 he became mixed world champion together with Jung Hwa Hyun . Four years later he won silver in this discipline (with Jung Hwa Hyun), in doubles with Kim Taek-soo he reached the semi-finals.
He was nominated three times for the Summer Olympics . When table tennis was first represented in 1988 , he won the first gold medal in singles when he defeated Kim Ki-taik in the all-Korean final . At this and the two following Summer Games he won bronze in doubles: 1988 with Ahn Jae-hyung, 1992 with Kim Taek-soo and 1996 with Lee Chul-seung .
Private
Yoo Nam-kyu's parents belonged to the wealthy class in South Korea. He still has two brothers. He has been married to the handbag designer Yoon Young Sil since 2007.
