Jiang Jialiang
Jiang Jialiang ( Chinese 江嘉良 , Pinyin Jiāng Jiāliáng ; born March 3, 1964 in Zhongshan ( Guangdong Province )) is a former Chinese table tennis professional . He was twice world champion in singles and three times with the Chinese team.
Athletic career
At the age of 7, Jiang Jialiang started playing table tennis in a sports boarding school. In 1976, he was invited to the team in Guangdong Province. Three years later he was discovered and promoted for the national team. The first successes were the individual victory at the international championships of Scandinavia in 1979 and of France in 1982.
In 1983 he was nominated for the first time for the world championship . Here he became world champion with the team of China. In the singles he finished 3rd, in the doubles he was runner- up with Xie Saike . In 1985 he became world champion in singles for the first time, and in 1987 he defended this title by winning the final over Jan-Ove Waldner . At these two World Championships he also won gold with the team from China, in 1987 he was still second in the mixed (with Jiao Zhimin ).
In 1987 the Chinese trade union awarded him the "May 1st Medal" for his services. In 1985 he was named "Guangdong Province Worker of the Year".
After the end of his active career, he worked abroad as a trainer and television commentator. He later returned to China and earned his living as a businessman in Pudong (Shanghai). In October 2002 he opened a table tennis school in Pudong.
Private
Jiang Jialiang is the son of a construction worker and a saleswoman. He still has six siblings. He is married to the actress Wu Yu Fong.
