Miklós Szabados [ ˈmikloːʃ ˈsɒbɒdoʃ ] (born March 20, 1912 in Budapest , † January 12, 1962 in Sydney ) was one of the best table tennis players in the world in the late 1920s and early 1930s . In 1931 he became world champion in singles, he also won 6 gold medals in doubles with Victor Barna and 3 gold medals in mixed with Mária Mednyánszky .

Career

Szabados was a Jew. He grew up in Hungary. His career ran parallel to that of Victor Barna and László Bellák , which is why they were also called the Three Musketeers . At the age of 17 he became the first Hungarian champion. In the same year he also took part in a world championship. Here he immediately became world champion in doubles and team competitions. In the singles final he lost to Fred Perry .

In 1931 he was finally world champion in individual. Further titles in singles was mostly in the way of Victor Barna, to whom he lost several times in finals.

Szabados studied in Berlin , but had to leave Germany in 1933 because of the Nazis. He toured France with Bellák - much to the displeasure of the Hungarian national coach, who therefore did not nominate him for the 1933 World Cup .

In 1936 he ended his tournament career. This year he took part in the World Cup and the Hungarian Championship for the last time.

In August 1937 he started a tour with István Kelen through Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and in 1938 Japan. Here they held many exhibition fights; they also took part successfully in several tournaments. Szabados stayed in Australia throughout the Second World War .

In 1941 he opened the first table tennis center in Sydney . In 1951 he was banned from the Australian Table Tennis Association for an indefinite period of time because he played in Victoria without their permission.
