Mária Mednyánszky
Mária Mednyánszky [ ˈmaːriɒ ˈmɛdɲaːnski ] (* 1901 , † December 22, 1979 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian table tennis player .
Life
Mednyánszky became the first table tennis world champion in 1926. She came from a wealthy family; this enabled her to participate in the World Cup. At the following four world championships she defended the title each time. In total, she won 28 medals at ten world championships, including 18 gold.
In a curious way, she almost missed her first world title. She was wrongly informed about the start of her first round match. She attended a soccer game with a friend and was actually late for the match, but the organizers allowed her to make up for the match. After that, she won all the games and became the world champion.
In 1976, the President of the Hungarian Table Tennis Association György Lakatos presented her with the highest award of the Hungarian state at the time, the Gold Medal of Sports Merit of the Hungarian People's Republic .
Mária Mednyánszky was married to the bank clerk Jenő Klucsik, who, like her, played in the club MTK ( Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre ). Her son Laszlo Kluksic wrote a book about Mária Mednyánszky in Hungary.
