Qiu Zhonghui

Qiu Zhonghui - formerly Chiu Chung-Hui - (* 1935 ) is a former Chinese table tennis player with the greatest successes in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1961 she became world champion in singles.

Qiu Zhonghui participated in five world championships from 1956 to 1963 . She was most successful in Beijing in 1961 when she became the first Chinese woman to become world champion in singles. In the final she defeated the Hungarian Éva Kóczián . She also won silver with Sun Mei-ying in doubles and with the women's team, and in mixed she reached the quarter-finals. She won bronze in the team competition in 1957 , 1959 and 1963 . A total of four times she made it to the semifinals, namely in 1959 in singles and doubles with Wang Chien and in 1963 in doubles with Wang Chien and in mixed with Zhuang Zedong .

In the ITTF world rankings she was led in 1961 at number one. In 1963, Qiu Zhonghui retired from active life for health reasons.

During the Cultural Revolution she was under house arrest and suffered reprisals.
