Ruth Hughes Aarons (born June 11, 1918 in Stamford , Connecticut , † June 6, 1980 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American table tennis player and two-time individual world champion.
family
Aarons was the daughter of Alfred E. Aarons , owner and operator of the Avon Theater in Chicago , and the opera singer Leila Hughes Aarons. She also had a brother named Lisle and a half-brother Alexander A. Aarons .
Career
When she was 15 she started playing in American tournaments. She had her most successful period from 1934 to 1937, when she won all the tournaments in which she participated. During these four years, she secured the title in singles and mixed doubles at the US championships, the latter with four different mixed partners (Sam Silberman, Sidney Heitner, Victor Barna and Robert Blattner ). Her greatest successes were undoubtedly the titles in the women's singles at the World Championships in 1936 in Prague (final against Astrid Krebsbach ) and in 1937 in Baden / Vienna .
In 1937, Aarons won the team world championship together with the US women's team.
World Championship 1937
The 1937 World Cup was curious: the final against Trude Pritzi was canceled because the time was exceeded; the title was not awarded at the time - a curiosity in the history of table tennis. The ITTF has since corrected this decision : Since April 2001 Trude Pritzi and Ruth Hughes Aarons have been listed as "co-world champions".
After the end of my TT career
After the end of her sports career, she founded Aarons Enterprises inc and worked here as a manager. She looked after well-known actors such as Shirley Jones , Jack Cassidy , George Chakiris and others. a.
