Shirley Mae Jones (born March 31, 1934 in Charleroi , Pennsylvania ) is an American actress . She was an acclaimed musical star and achieved great popularity as a mother on the television series The Partridge Family in the 1970s . For her appearance in the film Elmer Gantry , she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1961 .

Life

She was born the only child of Paul Jones, co-owner of the medium-sized Jones Brewing Company . Her parents named her Shirley after Shirley Temple . In 1952 she graduated from Huntington High School , attended the Pittsburgh Playhouse drama school in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. In the same year she won the "Miss Pittsburgh" election. In 1953 she was discovered in New York City while auditioning for the musical South Pacific by producers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein . In the same year she received in Hollywood the role of Laurey Williams in the film adaptation of the musical Oklahoma!

Her film career began with the filming of the musical. She made 32 films in total: she stood in front of the camera with David Niven and Marlon Brando for Bedtime Story , filmed The Cheyenne Social Club with Henry Fonda and James Stewart . She directed the musical Carousel with Gordon MacRae . In 1961 she received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film Elmer Gantry .

From 1970 to 1974 she starred in the television series The Partridge Family with her stepson David Cassidy . It was her first television role. She had previously been offered the role of mother in Three Girls and Three Boys (The Brady Bunch) , but she declined. She liked the role of the single mother Partridge and her family of six better and gained tremendous popularity. In 1985 she was nominated for an Emmy for portraying the relatives of an Alzheimer's patient in There Were Times, Dear .

In 1986 she was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Vine Street. In June 2004 she received the Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Award for her life's work .

Jones was married to actor Jack Cassidy from 1956 to 1974 , with whom she has three children: Shaun Paul , Patrick William and Ryan John. All three also work in the entertainment industry. In 1977 she married the actor Marty Ingels (1936–2015); In 2002 the divorce was filed. Together they ran the Edelweiss chocolate shop on Cañon Drive in Beverly Hills .

In July 2013, Jones' memoir Shirley Jones: A Memoir was published .
