Charleroi is a borough in Washington County in the southwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Pennsylvania . In 2000 Charleroi had 4,871 inhabitants; until the official estimate in 2009, the population had decreased to 4,542.

location

Charleroi lies on the left bank of the Monongahela River , one of the two headwaters of the Ohio River . About 35 km north is Pittsburgh , the center of the metropolitan region to which Charleroi also belongs.

On the southern edge of Charleroi, Interstate 70 runs in a west-east direction , which crosses US Highway 43, which is now four-lane, to the southwest of the town . Pennsylvania Route 88 and a CSX Transportation railway line run through the center of Charleroi, parallel to the Monongahela River .

history

Charleroi was founded in 1890 and registered as a borough a year later. The population was just under 6,000 in 1900 and grew to almost 11,000 in the following decades until 1940. In 2000 there were only 4,871 inhabitants, as the decline of the steel industry led to a strong emigration of the population.

Demographic data

At the official census in 2000 , the population was 4,871. These were distributed over 4,871 households in 2,258 families. The population density was 2,442.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 2,624 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 1,315.8 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 95.3 percent white , 3.2 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American , 0.3 percent Asian, and 0.2 percent other. 0.8 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.7 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the above groups.

20.5 percent were under 18 years of age, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 20.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 25.0 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 41 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 81.4 men, among the over 18 year olds 77.1.

The median income per household was 23,593  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 31,699 USD. The median income for men was $ 30,093 and that for women was $ 23,873. The per capita income was $ 13,752. Around 16.1 percent of families and 21.3 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
