Ding Ning ( Chinese 丁宁 , Pinyin Dīng Níng ; born June 20, 1990 in Daqing , Heilongjiang Province , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese table tennis player . With an Olympic victory, two World Cup titles and three individual world championship titles, she is one of the most successful table tennis players ever. She is left handed and uses the European shakehand style .
Career
Ding Ning first appeared internationally in 2004, when she won silver in singles and mixed (with Zhang Jike ) and gold with the team at the Asian Youth Championships . In 2005 she played her first Pro Tour tournaments , won her first Pro Tour medal by reaching the semi-finals at the Swedish Open and was World Youth Champion in singles, doubles and with the team. In October 2005 it was already in the top 100 of the world rankings . She took part in her first adult world championship in 2007 , in mixed with Lei Zhenhua she was eliminated in the round of 16 in the extension of the decisive set.
A big leap followed in 2009: by winning doubles at the Danish Open, she won her first gold medal on the Pro Tour, followed by gold in singles at the Kuwait Open, and in May she became vice world champion in doubles. In July she moved up to the top 10 of the world rankings, at the Asian Cup she won silver in mixed as well as gold in singles, doubles and team competitions. In addition, she qualified for the first time for the Pro Tour Grand Finals, where she won silver in singles and gold in doubles. At the 2010 World Cup she was part of the Chinese team that surprisingly lost to Singapore in the final.
The following year she finally made it to the top of the world: She won three Pro Tour titles, became world champion in singles and again vice world champion in doubles and won the World Cup on her first participation . As of November 2011, she was first in the world rankings for the first time. In 2012 she became world champion with the team for the first time and was nominated for the Olympic Games in London , where she won gold in the team and met Li Xiaoxia in the singles final . Ding Ning were counted several serves by the referee, which had a negative effect on her concentration, and she lost 4-1. At the Grand Finals 2012 and 2013 she won silver in singles for the third and fourth time in their third and fourth participation, and at the 2013 World Championships - in addition to bronze in singles - for the third time in a row silver in doubles. In 2012 and 2013, Ding Ning also won gold ten times in doubles on the World Tour. In 2014, she defeated Li Xiaoxia in the final of both the Asian Cup and the World Cup, regaining first place in the world rankings, which she had lost in September 2013. At the 2015 World Cup she was - although she was injured in the final in the decisive set - again world champion in the singles, but lost the doubles final for the fourth time the next day. In addition, this year she won the Grand Finals in singles for the first time , but fell back to third place in the world rankings in November.
Ding Ning won the last missing big title in 2016 when she met Li Xiaoxia again in the individual final of the Olympic Games and this time won 4: 3, completing the Grand Slam . In October she regained world number one. At the 2017 World Championships she was single world champion for the third time and was also able to win gold in doubles for the first time in her fifth finals. In the second half of the year, however, it was not very active, so that it dropped out of the world rankings for a month in November and, with the introduction of the new world rankings in 2018, was no longer in the top 10 for the first time since 2009. With the Chinese team she won the World Cup gold again in May , and in September she celebrated another great success at the World Cup with her third gold medal in her third participation in the individual. At the Swedish Open she surprisingly had to admit defeat to Mima Itō in the semifinals , at the Grand Finals in December - also in the semifinals - He Zhuojia , which was still enough to regain number 1 in the world rankings in January 2019. At the Grand Finals at the end of 2019, she was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 16 against Hitomi Satō .
In 2020 she won silver at the first World Tour tournament, the German Open , after losing to Chen Meng in the final .
