Afrika Islam (real name Charles Glenn ; * 1967 in New York ) is an American DJ and producer from New York and Los Angeles , California .

biography

Afrika Islam founded the Zulu Nation together with Afrika Bambaataa in the mid-1970s and was a DJ at all of the Zulu Nation's parties. He was also a member of the Rock Steady Crew . He was able to win the "International Annual DJ Competition" twice. He also appeared as a dancer in films such as " Flashdance " or "Breaking 1 & 2". In the mid-1980s he met Ice-T in Los Angeles and helped the rapper with the production of his first LP Rhyme Pays , which was awarded a gold record . One platinum and four gold releases followed. Until the early 1990s, Afrika Islam was the producer or co-producer of all Ice-Ts and Rhyme Syndicate releases (Ice-Ts extended crew). He also produced the early Everlast (later House of Pain ), Donald D and the first album of Ice-T's crossover project Body Count . Remixes for Eurythmics , Michael Jackson , De La Soul and Wu-Tang-Clan followed. His radio show Zulu Beats on Power 106 FM / Los Angeles is also popular.

In the early 1990s, he turned away from hip-hop and began working as a house and techno DJ. In his crossover sound he combines elements of R&B , hip-hop and techno & house. In 1995 he first appeared on Mayday . 1996/97 its cooperation with the German DJ began Westbam in the project Mr. X & Mr. Y .
