Xiis , also spelled Heis or Hais , is a place in the Sanaag region in northern Somalia . It is located on the coast of the Gulf of Aden and, according to current calculations, has about 1400 inhabitants.
The place is said to be identical with the ancient trading center Mundu , which is described in more detail in the Periplus Maris Erythraei , the book of an anonymous Alexandrian traveling salesman from the 1st century AD. At Xiis pottery and fragments of glass fragments from Rome from the 1st – 5th centuries were found. Century found.
To the east of the city, off the coast, is a small island called Xiis Island .
