The city is a member of Cittaslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to decelerate and increase the quality of life in cities through environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, upgrading of autochthonous products, hospitality, awareness and quality of the landscape.

The corpse of Henry VII in Suvereto

In August 1313, during a campaign in the context of the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelphs , Emperor Henry VII died . in Buonconvento from the consequences of malaria. During the transport of the corpse to the Ghibelline capital Pisa , the army stopped in Suvereto, which was also Ghibelline at the time. Here, near the Convento San Francesco, the corpse was prevented from decaying by drying it on a fire. After that, the body was laid out in the church of S.Giusto in Suvereto for about 2 years until the sarcophagus created by Tino di Camaino for the Cathedral of Pisa was completed. The sarcophagus is still in the south aisle of the Pisan Cathedral. Remember the episode in Suvereto z. B. the street name "Via della Insegna" (street of the coat of arms) and the name of the Palio dell 'Imperatore (see regular events ).
