Bibbona is an Italian commune with 3239 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Livorno in the Tuscany region .

geography

Bibbona lies 80 m above sea level south of the Val di Cecina (valley of the Cecina river ). The municipality covers an area of about 65 km².

The districts include La California and Marina di Bibbona. The neighboring municipalities are Casale Marittimo (PI) , Castagneto Carducci , Cecina , Guardistallo (PI), Montecatini Val di Cecina (PI) and Monteverdi Marittimo (PI).

history

The place on the hill was already a very important place in the early Middle Ages and was protected by strong fortifications. Numerous graves and some finds date from the Etruscan period. Most likely, the hill was already inhabited by then. Settlement is documented during Roman times .

In the early Middle Ages, the town and fortress were owned by the Gherardesca family . This ownership was much later by Pope Innocent III. confirmed in the 12th century. After that, ownership changed between the free cities of Volterra , Pisa and Florence .

Attractions

The town center preserved the building stock of the Middle Ages and the early modern period over long stretches. Several churches from the Middle Ages and some fortifications and towers can still be seen today. Among other things, the Torre di Bibbona, which was an essential part of the fortifications.

To the west of Bibbona are the seaside resorts of Forte di Bibbona and Marina di Bibbona .
