The Forte di Bibbona is a small fortress on the Tuscan coast in the Marina di Bibbona district of Bibbona .

history

The fort, like the Forte di Castagneto Carducci seven kilometers to the south , was built at the end of the 18th century by order of Leopold II , who wanted to better control the coastline of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . In addition to protecting against pirates, such forts were primarily used for health checks and to implement customs regulations .

Building

The complex is toward the sea with a massive Bastion from bricks secured. On the land side there is a barely defensive, palazzo-like house. The square building housed a guard, as well as the stables and cavalry quarters .

The seaside resort of Marina di Bibbona, which mainly consists of holiday homes, has developed around the former fort since the 1980s. The fort now serves as a holiday home for young people.
