The Forte di Castagneto Carducci is a small fortress on the Tuscan coast in the Marina di Castagneto Carducci district of Castagneto Carducci .

history

The fort, like the Forte di Bibbona seven kilometers to the north , was built at the end of the 18th century on the orders of Leopold II , who wanted to better monitor the coastline of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . In addition to protecting against pirates, such forts were primarily used for health checks and to implement customs regulations .

Building

The complex is toward the sea with a massive Bastion from bricks secured. On the land side there is a barely defensive, palazzo-like house. The square building housed a guard, as well as the stables and cavalry quarters .

In the 1950s, the seaside resort of Marina di Castagneto Carducci, which largely consists of holiday homes, was built around the former fort. The fort has been empty for several years. The facility is almost identical to the Forte di Bibbona that was built at the same time .
