Marciana Marina is an Italian municipality on the island of Elba with 1952 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the province of Livorno in Tuscany .

geography

The seaside resort and fishing village is located in a bay on the northwest coast of the island of Elba.
The place is also an independent municipality, surrounded by the municipality of Marciana , to which the place belonged until it became independent in 1951. The municipality has no other fractions (districts) and is the smallest municipality in Tuscany in terms of area.
Marciana Marina is located at the foot of the Monte Capanne massif , in the foothills of which the place nestles. The two mountain villages of Poggio and Marciana act as they once did as a guard post at an altitude of around 330–375 m in the midst of extensive chestnut forests.

history

The place was originally built as a port for the fortified mountain villages of Poggio and Marciana. When the pirate attacks subsided at the end of the 17th century, the place experienced a first boom. In 1884 he was raised to an independent municipality.

Attractions

The
Marciana Marina promenade, a former fishing village with a port, is located along the 850 m long bay directly on the sea. The promenade, which stretches from Cotone in the east to La Fenicia in the west and forms the central point for tourist and business life, is located directly on the shore. Numerous shops and cafes offer variety with a very nice view.

The Pisan Tower
At the western end of the bay is the Pisan defense tower Torre degli Appiani , built in the 12th century , to which the quay wall connects, which protects the harbor from waves. The tower was already marked on a map by Cristoforo Buondelmonti from 1420 as Torre di Marciana . Other common names are Torre Medicea or Torre Saracena .

La Fenicia and Vicinato lungo
Immediately south of the Pisan tower is one of two beaches in Marciana Marina, the coarse gravel beach La Fenicia. Nearby restaurants and the azure sea make a stay very pleasant. The second beach (gravel) begins directly at the western end of the beach promenade ( Vicinato lungo ) and extends to Cotone. Numerous cafes, restaurants and grocery stores are located here.

Chiesa Santa Chiara
Directly behind this row of houses is the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele (also Piazza della Chiesa ) with the Church of Santa Chiara, which was consecrated to the patron saint of the place and built around 1776 instead of a smaller church. The numerous and mostly atmospheric festivities of the place take place here. Every year on August 12th, the statue of the saint is brought to the port in a solemn procession.

Cotone
Cotone is the oldest part of the village. The houses were built on and on the rocks that gave the district its name ( cotone = large rocks). Here you will find a tiny harbor that actually only fits a fishing boat, as well as romantic alleys and signs of the fishing that is almost past. A wonderful view of Marciana Marina is offered while sunbathing on the accessible rocks.

Tourism and shopping

Marciana Marina is a popular tourist destination for hotel vacationers and holiday home residents. There are no campsites.

The place has all the necessary facilities, such as post office, banks with ATMs, Conad supermarket, small grocery stores, bakery, butcher's shop, pharmacy, wine shops and numerous restaurants and bars.
There is also a marina, as well as a dock for regular excursion boats. A beach life can only be recorded on the two gravel and gravel beaches mentioned above.

traffic

The town can be reached from the east ( Portoferraio- Procchio) on the coastal road that goes around Elba, provincial road 25. The road that continues to the west crosses the mountain villages of Poggio and Marciana. The ATL bus line also runs here regularly. Parking spaces are a bit on the edge of the village. The parking areas on the promenade are chargeable and very popular.
