history
Collesalvetti and most of the villages belonging to the municipality are of Etruscan-Roman origin. Since Roman times the main town was simply called Colle , the addition Salvetti first appeared in the 12th century; it was probably a landowner's name.
The history of the place is closely connected to the nearby Pisa. Access to the old port of Pisa was on the territory of the municipality (near Piano di Porto ). The progressive silting up and swamping in the Middle Ages led to the abandonment of this port and the later establishment of Livorno. In 1343, the municipality was destroyed by the troops of the Milanese ruler Luchino Visconti . In 1406 it was taken by Florence and later used as a hunting ground. The Medici also began to drain the marshland.
In 1808 Collesalvetti became an independent municipality under the Napoleonic rule. Agriculture was the only source of income until the 20th century, and industry did not develop until the second half of the 20th century. Stagno is the seat of an Agip refinery . At Guasticce there is a large freight center , the Interporto toscano A. Vespucci .
