Pietro Fanfani (born April 21, 1815 in Montale , † March 4, 1879 in Florence ) was an Italian philologist and writer.

Life

Pietro Fanfani initially devoted himself to studying medicine, which he soon exchanged for that of the native language and literature, then worked as a journalist and founded the journal Ricordi filologici in 1847 .

The following year the vortex of the revolutionary movement wrenched him from this peaceful activity. He took part in the fighting at Montanara and Curtatone ( village near Mantua, known for the happy meeting of the Austrians under Radetzky against the Neapolitan-Tuscan troops on May 29, 1848 ) and was taken as a prisoner to the Small Fortress Theresienstadt .

Released there soon, he got a job in Turin in the Ministry of Education, and later a similar one in Florence. In 1859 he took over the position of librarian at the Biblioteca Marucelliana in Florence, which he held until his death.

Fanfani had published a philological-literary monthly: L'Etruria from 1851-52 and, after this had been received, founded a number of fiction journals. His main philological works were lexical works, which he had launched in 1849 with a polemic against the Accademia della Crusca , into which he was accepted in March 1869, but which he left again in 1874 because of disputes with its secretary Cesare Guasti .

In 1855 he published the highly deserving Vocabolario della lingua italiana (2 vols.) In Florence , which was followed by a Vocabolario dell'uso toscana and Vocabolario della pronuncia toscana (both Florence 1863), most recently the Vocabulario italiano della lingua parlata (1876) and related works.

He owed his considerable reputation as a writer in addition to the in-depth learning a certain liveliness of mind, which is also the humor was not foreign, just as he also in the journal Piovano Arlotto had created a widely valued member for fine and witty humor. The Scritti cappricciosi "(1864) and the humorous satire Democritus ridens. Ricreazioni letterarie (1872) are interesting achievements in this direction.

In addition, with luck, he was also active in the field of novels; it appeared from him:

  • Cecco d'Ascoli , a story from the 14th century (2nd edition, Florence. 1870);
  • La Paolina (Florence 1868);
  • Una bambola novel for children (Florence 1869);
  • Il fiaccherrajo e la sua famiglia , a story from Florentine folk life (Milan 1874), and
  • Novella e gheribezzi (1879).

Pietro Fanfani published a good multi-volume selection of Antonio Francesco Grazzini's works: Opere di Antonfrancesco Grazzini detto il Lasca . This includes Le cene ed altre prose (Florence 1857) and Commedie (Florence 1859) , among others .
