Rio is one of the now seven municipalities on the island of Elba, which belongs to the Tuscany region in Italy . It was formed on January 1, 2018 and has 3430 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Rio is located in the northeast of the island of Elba . In addition to the places (fractions) Rio Marina, Rio nell'Elba, Bagnaia, Cavo, Nisportino and Nisporto, the municipality also includes the islands of Palmaiola , Cerboli , Isola di Ortano and Isola dei Topi .

The neighboring municipalities are Porto Azzurro and Portoferraio .

history

After a referendum in 2017, the municipality was formed on January 1, 2018 from the municipalities of Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba . The seat of the municipality is Rio Marina.
