Pasquale Poccianti (born May 16, 1774 in Bibbiena , † October 21, 1858 in Florence ) was an Italian architect . He was one of the main exponents of classical architecture in Tuscany .

Life

Pasquale Poccianti was born in 1774 in Bibbiena, Tuscany, to Pietro and Margherita Falesi. After the death of his father, at the age of 10 he came to live with an uncle in Florence . From 1791 he was enrolled there at the Accademia Fiorentina di Belle Arti in the architecture class. His teacher was Gaspare Maria Paoletti .

In 1794, when he was barely twenty, he finished his studies and joined the Scrittoio delle Regie Fabbriche , a technical department that managed both civil and military construction projects on behalf of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . From 1806 he worked for the city of Livorno , first as an assistant to Neri Zocchi, then from 1809 as an architect. From 1817, after the death of Giuseppe Manetti, he was the first architect of the Fabbriche director and remained so until his retirement in 1835. Even after that, he worked well into old age as a consultant architect for the Grand Duke, and from 1849 was a member of the Direzione dei Lavori d 'Acque e Strade e delle Fabbriche civili dello Stato and from 1849 member of the Consiglio d'Arte .

Pasquale Poccianti died at the age of eighty after an accident during a fire drill.

Architectural style

In contrast to many other architects of the time, Poccianti did not go to Rome to study ancient buildings; rather, his style, as is generally true of the architecture of classicism in Tuscany, is strongly influenced by the Florentine Renaissance . Poccianti developed a personal style, mainly through the numerous public commissions he carried out. He combined the simplicity of the classic with abstract forms of engineering architecture, in which the structure of the building is emphasized compared to the ornament.

Works

Cisternone

The Cisternone, a reservoir built between 1828 and 1833 in Livorno, is Poccianti's main work . It is part of a water pipeline (Acquedotto Leopoldino) that leads from Colognole near Collesalvetti to Livorno, and whose construction Poccianti directed from 1809. A coffered half-dome rises above a portico with eight columns. The building is reminiscent of ancient Roman cisterns and French revolutionary architecture . Other buildings related to the aqueduct in Livorno are the Cisternino di città (1848) and the Cisternino di Pian di Rota (1852).

Reconstruction of the Palazzo Pitti

From 1815 onwards, Poccianti worked on the renovation of the Palazzo Pitti , the residence of the Grand Dukes in Florence. From 1819 new, splendidly furnished salons were built on the second floor. In 1820 the construction of a connecting corridor between the Palazzo Pitti and the Museo di Fisica began , as it were as a southern extension of the corridor between the Palazzo Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti (Corridoio Vasariano). The large flight of stairs in front of the main facade, which was only completed in 1847, is also a design by Poccianti. In 1821 work began on the new vestibule on the ground floor in the Doric style, and in 1822 the Palazzina della Meridiana in the Boboli Gardens was completed (new south facade, around 1830). From 1835 to 1839 two new large side wings (rondò) were built for the palace.
