Poggio (Italian for hill ) is a district of the municipality of Marciana in the west of the Italian island of Elba in the province of Livorno with about 240 inhabitants.

location

The village was built at a height of 330 m on the northern slope of Monte Capanne in the middle of chestnut and holm oak forests and is 3 km southeast of the main town of the municipality of Marciana , Marciana Alta. The road SP 25 leads in serpentines through the village. Marciana Marina , the port by the sea, is 3 km as the crow flies in the northeast.

history

The origins of Poggio can be found in the 8th century.

Worth seeing

  • When strolling through the streets of the village - all car-free - you will notice that everything is almost miniature: the houses, their windows, the streets, alleys and stairs as well as the balconies of the houses. Everything is grouped around the Church of San Niccolò.
  • The church of San Niccolò was built in the 13th century AD on the highest point of the terraced arrangement on a ridge, which is why the Romans also called it a podium , and the associated bell tower was added in the 18th century. The outside staircase and exterior facade still preserved today date from this time. The church is one of the three fortified churches (to be compared, but not to be equated with fortified churches or fortified churches ) on the island of Elba and was the safest and best defendable place in the village, where the residents retreated in case of danger.
  • In the lower, northern outskirts of Poggio is the church of San Defendente from the 16th century, which was restored in 1796. The bell tower was built in 1815 and the facade was completed in 1821.
  • The nearby medicinal spring in a sharp right-hand bend between Poggio and Marciana Alta became famous when Napoleon was able to use the spring water to alleviate his chronic bladder disease. The spring water obtained from the Fonte Napoleone is now bottled, marketed and offered all over Elba. There is a specially set up free tap for residents and tourists.

economy

Poggio is a former mining village and has been a climatic health resort for several years . Another important source of income is tourism.
